Monastery of Scarzuola

The Monastery of “Scarzuola” was founded in 1218 by St. Francesco from Assisi. In the apse of this church there is a fresco dating back to the first half of the XIII century, that is one of the first portraits of the Saint while he’s levitating.
In 1956, the convent was purchased and restored by the architect Tomaso Buzzi, who planned and built (between 1965 and 1981) his Ideal Town next to the monastery.
Such a complex – interesting from the architectural point of view – has an undefinable and surreal style, with its long and short flights of stairs all around, parts of the buildings deliberately out of proportion, statues, jumble of edifices and monuments… With the result that all is somewhat magic.
In order to reach La Scarzuola coming from Fabro, you need to follow the road signs for Montegabbione, then the ones for Montegiove. Once passed Montegiove, go on about 1.5 km farther and you’ll find a sign indicating a dirt road leading to the old monastery.
